Few reality TV celebs have projected fame into dollar signs quite like Kim Kardashian. Last year the TV personality, actress, socialite, businesswoman and model was the highest-paid reality television personality with her earnings going beyond $53 million. The year before she raked in $28 million.
She started off her career — most would argue — as a stylist to fellow wealthy socialite Paris Hilton. But after turning to her own prominence Kardashian is said to owe almost half her income to her iPhone and tablet app Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. The game is as frivolous as reality TV itself: users can create the own celebrity (as if we don’t have enough already). But owning an app isn’t the easiest way she compiles her wealth. In a job which people on the doll could only ever dream of, Kardashian gets paid in the region of $10,000-25,000 to post for brands on her popular Instagram and Twitter feeds. Not bad work if you can get it.
The challenge is to try and get 33 million followers, though, catching the attention of an audience who actually wants to see and read your posts.
She has also earned her wealth with other seemingly ridiculous ideas, such as the publishing of her book, Selfish, which is a collection made entirely of Kardashian selfies she’s taken (maybe when not busy posting for cash on her social media). She’s only in her mid-thirties — and she’s probably not worrying one jot about retirement.
Some would argue that Kardashian owes her real fame to the release of a sex tape with her ex boyfriend Ray J, which was ‘leaked’ in 2007. Then there was the massively popular reality TV series Keeping Up with the Kardashians — which was (as you’d expect), all about the Kardashian family. Kim’s marriage to rapper Kanye West in 2014 also did little to halt her meteoric rise in popularity and earnings.
Her talent for creating newsworthy lines when there’s not much going on, also drives her relevance — and no doubt her bank balance. No such thing as ‘bad PR’ aye. She recently posted a nude selfie on Twitter, captioned ‘When you’re like I have nothing to wear LOL’, which made the rounds of almost all publications known on earth. Clearly this brand endorsement was for her self. Even Kim Kardashian needs public attention and affirmation.
After being met with criticism with her latest nude selfie, Kim hit back by saying: ‘I am empowered by my body. I am empowered by my sexuality. I am empowered by feeling comfortable in my skin. I am empowered by showing the world my flaws and not being afraid of what anyone is going to say about me. hope that through this platform I have been given, I can encourage the same empowerment for girls and women all over the world.’
Well, whatever view you hold about Kim flashing her body of Twitter, one thing we can be sure of is that she’s certainly not worrying about heating bills, to stay warm while she prances around her house stark naked.
