American big-time actor Matt Damon is one of Hollywood’s hottest stars. He is so synonymous with success actually, that Forbes rank him as one of the highest grossing actors of all time. Now that’s some serious accolade and makes it easier to understand why he can command the big bucks.
The now 46-year-old star has won all kinds of awards as well as big bucks on the way to earning them. Damon has won an Academy Award, a couple of Golden Globes, and has also been nominated even for British Academy Film Awards. Oh, and did we mention the five Emmy’s?
Probably no surprise now when we tell you that the world-class A-list star is worth a massive $120 million dollars.
His popularity is sort of intwined with another American star of a similar age, Mr. Ben Affleck, and the two have starred in several films together over the years. They are actually childhood friends. Quite something that they both became big-time actors worth a fortune and remain close mates.
Damon once said: ‘I’m not Brad Pitt or George Clooney. Those guys walk into a room and the room changes. I think there's something more... not average, but everyman about me.’
Sure, Damon is right, there is something far more ‘everyman’ about him compared to Clooney and Pitt; but his bank account is certainly not everyman.
So how did Damon’s success begin? Where did it all start? And did the Harvard brainbox get noticed when he appeared in several theatre plays there?
Born to parents of English, Scottish, Swedish and Finnish decent, his parents divorced when he was just two years old, and Damon and his brother (who is now a sculptor and artist) lived with their mother in Cambridge in a communal living space with five other families.
Perhaps that sort of communal life made Damon a bit more relatable to people, which in turn has helped him with his acting career. He did always want to be an actor, right from a young age.
The 80 and 90s were the years that really launched his career, after he landed roles in films such as, Mystic Pizza, School Ties.
But the films that really launched Damon into a big Holywood star are the films everyone knows about, such as the classic Good Will Hunting, Ocean’s trilogy, Saving Private Ryan, and the very entertaining The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Also, what can emphasise an actors success more than a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Well, Damon has one.
He stars in the soon to be released film, The Great Wall, where he does something like saving China. He’ll increase his fortune with this film, we can be pretty sure of that considering the money he commands.
