He is one of Hollywood’s classic modern-day American actors, one of its biggest start; the winner of three Golden Globes, an man who has made more than a mark in his chosen industry — and who along with it has accumulated a colossal wealth as both actor and producer of $470 million net worth.
Cruise started his career as a 19-year-old lad in the 1981 hit Endless Love, but the film that really set alight the star’s prolific career was undoubtedly Top Gun in 1986.
This is what launched him from plain actor to superstar, and which saw him go on to feature in so many classic films it’s hard to list them all without making it boring. A few worthy of mention though, would be Cocktail, Magnolia, Jerry Maguire, Rain Man, and Mission: Impossible. These are some of his biggest films.
Now to get a sense of where all of Cruise’s money has come from, lets consider two of the films which he starred in as the lead role: Top Gun and Mission: Impossible. The former grossed a massive $356 million, while the latter grossed an even more impressive sum of $457 million, and went on to produce two follow-up films.
That’s some serious cash that saw him cruise to the big league of entertainment-acquired wealth.
Despite his German and Irish heritage, Cruise — who grew up in ‘near poverty’ — is a New York native, and the son of a mother teacher and an electrical engineer father who is reported to have been abusive. But this poor fortune doesn’t appear to have held back the mega star.
Cruise is also a fierce supporter for the Church of Scientology, which many consider to be nothing more than an oversized cult — and which he has been involved with since the early 90s.
He once said: ‘As a young actor, people were trying to define who I was before I really knew that for myself. But I still remember thinking, 'This is what I love doing, and I hope I'm going to be able to do it forever.’
If he does do it ‘forever’, then we could perhaps expect to see his net worth rise at some point to over a billion dollars. Not bad sums for doing something you love.
Talking of love, Cruise has had a notably up and down love life. In the 80s he showed interest in older women, but most notably with superstar Cher, who was 16 years older. Cruise has also tied the knot several times with some equally big female Hollywood stars, such as actresses Nicole Kidman, Katie Holmes, and Mimi Rogers.
It is widely reported that Cruise took up acting after he suffered a knee injury and was signed off from competing in his school’s wrestling team, before moving to LA to try to make a full-on career out of it. He certainly succeeded with that. Not a bad career move after all.
‘I've been... chased by paparazzi, and they run lights, and they chase you and harass you the whole time. It happens all over the world, and it has certainly gotten worse. You don't know what it's like being chased by them.’
We’re pretty sure many would put up with that for that amount of cash. That’s the big league stuff.
