PointsBet is an Australian bookmaker which first broke ground in the US at the start of 2019, initially offering its modern sportsbook platform in New Jersey. Availability has since expanded to eight states, with others in the pipeline for 2022.

A key advantage PointsBet touts over other US sportsbooks is their extensive coverage. It offers more NBA and NFL markets than any other online betting site worldwide. Alongside traditional fixed odds markets, PointsBet also offers a proprietary betting format, PointsBetting, making it a great option for both casual and serious sports fans who are looking for a different way to play.

Welcome Bonus Offer

Rather than a traditional bonus on deposits, PointsBet offers bettors a simple alternative new customers can get one refund up to a value of $2,000 in free bets if their very first fixed odds or PointsBetting wager loses.

As with many other online betting sites, its important to remember that any winning bets credited to your account will consist only of the winnings and does not include the stake. Any free bets must also be used within seven days of being credited to your account and on markets of $1.50 (-200) or more odds.

One perk compared to other US sportsbooks is that PointsBet has no rollover requirements for free bets, so you’re free to cash out any bonus-associated winnings straight away.

Site Overview

After starting off in Australia in 2017, PointsBet entered the American market two years later, bringing its unique PointsBetting format with it. Starting with New Jersey, it has since expanded its footprint to seven other states with more on the way, and it’s beginning to look like strong competition in the US online gambling market.

PointsBet prides itself on its innovation, with user-friendly iOS and Android apps for mobile play and a slick desktop website for easy access to its wide variety of sports market offerings, which is second to none. Not only can you access more markets on the major US sports NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL than anywhere else in the world, but PointsBet gives punters a wide variety of bet types too, many of which are new and unique.

Throw in live streaming functionality, parlay bets, in-play bets and early cash-out across 20 different sports, the PointsBetting variable outcome format, and theres bound to be something for you, no matter how you like to play. It’s all wrapped up in a clean, modern user experience too, making  it straightforward to navigate its range of options.

Sports and Markets

Sports betting is the star of the show with PointsBet. Everything youd expect is here for a US sportsbook, and then some more unusual markets include handball and Aussie rules football, which is no surprise, given PointsBets Australian heritage.

The full roster is as follows:

  • Aussie Rules
  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Boxing
  • Cricket
  • Cycling
  • Darts
  • e-Sports
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Handball
  • Hockey
  • MMA
  • Motor Racing
  • Rugby League
  • Rugby Union
  • Soccer
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis
  • Volleyball

As well as sports, markets on entertainment are also available, although there were no offerings at the time of review. PointsBet also gives punters the option to name a bet, should they want to place a more bespoke wager.

Sports live streams are offered on the site through an agreement with Genius Sports, which also works with other popular US betting sites such as BetMGM. Tennis and soccer are the headlines here, rounded out with esports, volleyball and table tennis.

Special Features

One of the biggest things that differentiates PointsBet from other online betting sites is its proprietary PointsBetting wager format. This is where a bettor makes a traditional wager such as a spread, total or prop, but their winnings or losses are variable. The variability is based upon how correct the bet was once the game has finished.

With a variable outcome, its important for bettors to remember that there is a potential for large losses. As such, PointsBet provides a Stop Loss feature for those who want to limit their losses. Bettors can apply a custom multiplier cap to their wager so their winnings or losses do not exceed this amount. Stop Loss is only available on high-volatility markets such as NFL or NBA totals, and these are also subject to maximum win and loss limits by PointsBet.

Another draw for PointsBet is its unique markets which cant be found on other US sportsbooks, such as quarterback completion percentage, time of first touchdown, longest made field goal distance, and many more.

Bettors can place parlay bets too, aided by the Quick Parlay feature of the site, making constructing your wager incredibly easy. PointsBet also provides bettors with one Parlay Booster token every 24 hours, which can be used to get an enhanced price on any parlay of three legs or more.

Like many online betting sites, PointsBet provides the ability to place in-play bets and partial cash-outs. This is accompanied by integrated live streaming in partnership with Genius Sports, with whom PointsBet has secured streams for tennis, soccer, esports, volleyball, and table tennis sporting events. While the site prominently displays a schedule for upcoming events starting times are shown with to-the-second countdowns to ensure you dont miss any of the action it was unclear for which events a live stream would be available. A live stream schedule is something wed hope to see in future, and would help PointsBet on its journey to becoming a one-stop shop when it comes to in-play betting.

Something that really makes PointsBet competitive versus other online betting sites is that there are no rollover requirements for free bet winnings. If you’re lucky enough to land some winnings with a free bet, theyre yours to keep. Theres also parlay insurance, giving bettors a free bet of up to $25 if one leg fails.

Theres also a generous referral scheme, with $100 in free bets up for grabs for you and a friend once they deposit $50. PointsBets VIP program offers two tiers, Diamond and Platinum, although these are by invitation only. For everybody else, theres PointsBet Rewards, a points scheme which can be redeemed for free bets.

Otherwise, there arent tons of promotions on the table at PointsBet compared to other US betting sites. Instead, it focuses around greater value for punters as standard, as shown by their zero rollover requirements and No Juice promotion where +100 NFL spreads are offered with 0% vig or book margin. Another unique aspect is its Karma Kommittee bettors may call upon the Kommittee to give free bets to those affected by a bad beat such as an injured player a fun social aspect not seen among other US sportsbooks.

Payment Options

PointsBets payment options are much like other US betting sites, with online banking, PayPal, ACH/eCheck, credit, and debit cards supported. PayNearMe is available too, and for those in IA, NJ, and IL there are a handful of cash deposit options at brick-and-mortar casinos.

These options are mirrored for withdrawal, with PayPal coming in first place for fast payouts. PointsBet takes 1-2 business days to process the request, but once this is done, the funds are in your PayPal account within 30 minutes. Online banking and ACH/eCheck are slower, with 1-2 business days to process internally and a further 1-3 business days for funds to reach your account. Again, there is some cash withdrawal availability in IA, NJ, and IL.

If youre a sports bettor, theres no question that PointsBet is worth your time. With such a wide array of markets to choose from, it would be hard not to find what youre looking for. If you cant, theres the Name a Bet feature to fill any gaps.

The site itself is snappy and fun to use, and its simple to get around, meaning more time can be spent perfecting a parlay or diving into the alternative PointsBetting format. Customer support isnt as extensive as it is at some US sportsbooks, with no phone line to call, but theres email and live chat, and also a dedicated help section. This felt a bit unfinished at the time of review, but the platform is not long off the ground so this may become more comprehensive as time goes on.

It’s clear that PointsBet is driven to create one of the leading US sportsbooks, with a real focus on value for bettors. The company continues to forge partnerships with other industry heavyweights to build upon its solid foundation, so we expect to see it continue to expand within the US sportsbook market. Its player-centric approach and desire to innovate certainly makes it one of the US betting sites to watch.
